Rehabilitation for Myopathy / Muscle diseases

Myopathy is a neuromuscular disorder (NMD). It literally means muscle disease. The disease can occur in any muscle of the body, causing a weakness or even paralysis, with the result that the patient can do less and less.

People with this condition often have loss of strength in their arms and legs. People can also suffer from fatigue, pain in their joints and / or muscles, less ability to cope with low temperatures, less endurance and in some cases problems with swallowing or breathing.

When the nerves are affected, there is sometimes a change in physical feeling or there are tingling or a change in the muscle tension (spasticity). A disease of the nerves is also called neuropathy.

Muscle diseases can occur from a young to an elderly age. Not everyone suffers the same. It depends on the person, but also on the muscle group where the disease manifests itself. There are many types of myopathies; this is a collective name for a large number of muscle diseases, or of the nerves that control the muscles.

The most well known muscle diseases are:

  • ALS / Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
  • PSMA / Progressive Spinal Muscular Atrophy
  • SMA / Spinal Muscular Atrophy
  • FSHD / Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy
  • HMSN / Hereditary Motoric and en Sensorics’ Neuropathies
  • Polyneuropathy
  • IBM / Inclusion Body Myositis
  • MD / Myotome Dystrophy
  • SCA / Spinal Cerebellar Ataxia
  • PPS / Post-Polio Syndrome

All these muscle diseases are progressive to a greater or lesser extent. This means that the complaints will increase over time. How fast this goes varies per disease and per person. The rehabilitation treatment is geared to this.

Rehabilitation Program

As a result of the reduced muscle strength you can experience problems with your daily activities. The rehabilitation treatment is generally aimed at allowing you to continue your activities independently for as long as possible with the highest possible quality of life. In consultation with you, the rehabilitation doctor determines the goal and the approach to your treatment. A muscle disease / myopathy is a diagnosis that causes many changes in your life. You will benefit most from a treatment that fits your specific living conditions.

You will receive information about the rehabilitation treatment at the start of your treatment process. During an intake interview we find out what your options and limitations are at that moment. Together with you we look at the achievable goals and what your wishes and possibilities are.

The rehabilitation doctor will discuss the rehabilitation treatment plan with you in detail. If you agree with your program, we achieve a good basis for your rehabilitation. During the rehabilitation period, we regularly check whether the situation has changed and whether we need to adjust the rehabilitation treatment. Your treatment will be tailored to the stage of your condition. We try to guide you in every phase as good as possible in order to maximize your quality of life and to maintain it.
