What is ALS?
ALS is a disease of the nerve cells (motor neurons) that control the muscles. As a result, the signals from the brain no longer reach the muscles. This leads to muscle weakness and paralysis. The exact cause of ALS is not yet known. ALS is progressive in nature and unfortunately there is no cure yet.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease of the nerve cells (motor neurons) which causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles which leads to muscle weakness and paralysis. ALS is progressive in nature. This means that an ALS-patient gradually deteriorates and becomes more and more dependent. The exact cause of ALS is not yet known and unfortunately there is no cure yet.
The moment you are diagnosed with ALS your life will be turned upside down, not only yours but also your partner’s and loved ones’. The consequences of ALS are far-reaching. Over time your physical limitations will increase and your impairments will leave you incapacitated. Suddenly, ordinary things are no longer self-evident and you are becoming more and more dependent on the people around you.
At Medifit, our treatment team will help you deal with the consequences of ALS and related disorders. The rehabilitation programme is individually tailored to your specific personal needs and will be adjusted in accordance with the development of your symptoms.

Rehabilitation programmes for our ALS patient is always custom-made
A multidisciplinary approach is essential for ALS rehabilitation. In that way we help you to avoid secondary effects, minimize restrictions and deal with all the consequences of ALS. In order to tune the rehabilitation fully to your needs we have a multidisciplinary team with your rehabilitation doctor, neuropsychologist, occupational therapist neurologist and physiotherapist.
With our rehabilitation programme we want to ensure that you and your loved ones can function and feel as well as possible. We do not have a standard rehabilitation service. At Medifit, we will adapt the treatment to your symptoms, wishes and possibilities.
You can come to us for inpatient (residential) and outpatient rehabilitation. In the case of inpatient rehabilitation, we temporarily have you stay at our rehabilitation centre with 24 hours of medical care and medical assistance. If you are an outpatient, you simply live at home and come to our rehabilitation centre several times a week.
